The 4th Coloproctology Symposium, which took place this year at the House of Physicians, was met with great enthusiasm. Over 150 participants from all over Germany attended the lectures of internationally renowned speakers. The opening lecture by Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Stelzner on the topic “What Holds the Pelvic Organs in Place? – New Insights into the Anatomy and Function of the Continence Organ” sparked an animated discussion.

Taking Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Stelzner’s lecture into account, it is important to preserve, particularly the distal parts of the cloacal organ, in the various disease patterns and surgical procedures presented, meaning destructive procedures should be avoided. A reconstruction preserving the important sensitive parts should be the goal in all surgical procedures.

Considering this aspect, the results of the transanal open hemorrhoidopexy developed by Dr. Pakravan and performed in cooperation with his former practice community in Düsseldorf and Prof. Dr. Baeten, University Clinic Maastricht, Netherlands, were presented. The presentation generated great interest and was positively received by the congress participants. We hope that the surgical method will be further evaluated in the future at several centers in the form of a multi-center study.
